Yes, we compete against strong, competitive teams every weekend, depending on the league we participate in. However, our focus extends beyond just playing against top teams—we prioritize developing both skills and character in our players. Additionally, we conduct regular grade checks throughout the season to reinforce the importance of excelling as a true “student-athlete.”
As a former Division II football player and track athlete, I bring firsthand experience and a deep understanding of athletic development to my coaching. I have worked with athletes from 5th through 12th grade, focusing on their growth both on and off the court. My assistant coach complements this approach with her extensive basketball knowledge and experience. Having played through high school and with a strong coaching background, she emphasizes fundamental skills and a well-rounded approach to player development, providing a valuable perspective to our team.
After warm-ups, we transition into dynamic drills such as 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 scenarios, focusing on quick decision-making and game-like situations. This segment lasts about 15–20 minutes. We then move to four-corner layups and elbow shots, emphasizing communication and precision. Offensive players call for the ball while passers deliver it accurately. Starting from a triple-threat position, players execute decisive moves toward the basket, continuing this focus for another 15–20 minutes.
Next, we shift to passing drills that include backdoor cuts, front cuts, back cuts, and screen-away actions. These drills emphasize movement without the ball, proper footwork, and timing. To enhance understanding, we occasionally watch game film together during practice or schedule separate film review sessions at my home in Gilbert.
We then work on positioning and boxing out, reinforcing the importance of rebounding fundamentals. This transitions into reviewing and practicing our playbook, which consists of about 15 plays, including inbound strategies.
Defensive skills are another key focus, with drills on ball pressure, proper positioning, and footwork. Players are encouraged to stay lower than their opponent to maintain an advantage. We also integrate various passing drills to reinforce fundamentals and conclude this segment with partner drills that focus on off-hand techniques.
Toward the end of practice, we dedicate 30–45 minutes to scrimmages, giving players the chance to apply skills in a competitive setting. We finish with conditioning drills, such as suicides, to build stamina and resilience.
Our practices are designed to be engaging, structured, and varied, keeping players focused while fostering skill development and teamwork. You’re always welcome to drop in and observe. While we ensure the sessions are fun, we maintain a strong emphasis on hard work and continuous improvement.
We practice outdoors during the winter for several strategic reasons, one of which is the use of triple rims. These rims challenge players to refine their shooting accuracy and develop greater precision, ultimately preparing them to excel in indoor games where the conditions are more forgiving.
Yes, we operate year-round to ensure continuous development for our players.
